Andrew McNeice from MelodicRock.com[4] states "Over the top…melodic....powerful…emotional…bold…brilliant…intelligent…crazy...self-indulgent…passionate. All of the above and more. This is a classic album. Journey or otherwise, this is a masterpiece of musical genius. It joins Escape and Frontiers as classic ground breaking albums in Journey history." [5]

Ross Muir of FabricationsHQ, on the other hand, was less gushing in his praise, but did state that Eclipse was Journey's "most interesting album of the Millennium", ultimately noting that "Eclipse will disappoint or confuse many Greatest Hits fans and the Don't Stop Believing Glee clubbers, but this is a good, hard-edged rock album. It contains some flaws but also carries some great moments."[6]

Caryn Ganz of Rolling Stone Magazine was even less kind, giving the album two stars, calling it bloated, and referring to Pineda's vocals as "distractingly proggy". "(Neal Schon) OD's on noodly solos and chugging Nineties-style power chords". [7]

Parade magazine "Pick" in the May 22, 2011 issue, and Entertainment Weekly "Today's Pick" in the May 23, 2011 issue.

Japanese magazine Burrn! awarded Eclipse a score of 90.

Commercial performance

Following 2008's highly successful Revelation album, Eclipse sold 21,400 copies in the United States in its debut week, taking #13 on Billboard 200. Eclipse marks Journey's second straight top 20 album with current lead singer Arnel Pineda.

Eclipse did have a strong sales debut outside of the United States, charting in the top 40 album charts in 5 different countries including: Japan #18, the United Kingdom #33, Germany #14, Sweden and Switzerland #24. Eclipse album is nominated for the best album of the year in Classicrock Roll of Honour Awards 2011. The results of this nomination will be announced in Nov. 11, 2011.
